HMP Isle of Wight had the honour and pleasure of welcoming HRH Princess Anne to the Parkhurst site on 1st October 2010.
Princess Anne’s visit encompassed the mobility workshop, which teaches welding, spray painting and mechanics. The workshop is also responsible for the refurbishment of wheelchairs and bicycles, which then go to the charity WFTW who distribute them to disadvantaged people both in the UK and abroad.
The Princess was also shown the visits room at Parkhurst, and took time to chat to all those in attendance from various departments, much to their delight.
Princess Anne spoke briefly with Dave Wilson, founder of the Veterans In Prison Association (VIPA), about the charity. He explained the expectations and aspirations of VIPA and what is envisaged for the future regarding the reintegration of veterans from the Criminal Justice System back into society. The Princess seemed pleased with the efforts of the charity and wished them well.
Princess Anne’s visit to HMP Isle of Wight was a truly special occasion for the Prison, a feeling that was echoed by all.
Butler Trust Recognition
Prior to the royal visit, Simon Sheppard, Chairman of the Butler Trust, presented a letter of recognition from Trevor Brooking CBE to Officer Dave Wilson; congratulating him on setting up VIPA, which is now a national charity with Simon Weston as its patron. Dave was delighted to accept the letter on behalf of all the staff involved with VIPA.
Mr Sheppard said “The Butler Trust annual awards are recognition for outstanding dedication, skill and creativity on the part of those working in the correctional settings across the United Kingdom”
