Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans are supported housing projects that cater exclusively for ex-Service men and women who are struggling to cope after leaving the military. Each resident receives practical and emotional support tailored to their own specific needs in an understanding and non-judgemental environment. Support is provided by both the Alabaré team and other professional bodies, including those specialising in issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or drug and alcohol addiction. Residents are offered advice and guidance on a range of issues including housing, employment and health. They are also encouraged to develop skills around budgeting and maintaining a home, all skills they may never have needed to develop whilst serving. Each resident will work towards their own personal goals enabling them to rebuild their lives and regain their independence.
Alabaré has three Homes for Veterans in:
Plymouth – opened in Feb 2009 in partnership with The Royal British Legion Bristol – opened in Nov 2010 with support from ABF The Soldiers Charity and RAF Association Weymouth – opened in Dec with support from The Royal British Legion
Alabaré plans to open further Homes for Veterans across the South and South West.
See below for information about individual sites.
In addition to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans, the charity can also provide support to veterans in a number of other ways:
Front line support: Alabaré runs two Drop in Centres – in Salisbury and Trowbridge – which provide a safe and welcoming daytime shelter to homeless and vulnerable adults. For Veterans who are struggling, the Centres provide hot food and drink, clothing, washing and laundry facilities and advice on housing, health and employment. The Drop In Centres are often a stepping stone to other structured support.
Keeping their homes: Alabaré’s Floating Support Services provide housing-related support to people in their own homes, enabling them to maintain their tenancies and prevent homelessness.
New skills: Alabaré’s Home and Money Training Programme is a series of housing related group workshops aimed at equipping people with the skills they need to maintain their tenancies and prevent homelessness.
